Intention-Seeking Questions For an Authentic Life

During these uncertain times, I’m reminded that seeking intention will guide me even when I’m not too sure about the external things in life. I’m amazed at the synchronicity of my 2020 New Year’s resolution, which was to continue seeking intention in the things I do. So far, I’ve felt like I’ve had a little more purpose in my life. Below are the questions that I keep in mind as I lead my day-to-day life.

Shopping

What is the purpose of buying this item? Do I really need it? How often will I use it? Can I use another item that I already have to solve the problem I’m seeking to achieve? Is this worth buying, or could I do something else with my money? Can I make this myself? Does my purchase support a local business or a national company?

Charity

Why should I donate to this cause? Do I really believe in the mission? Is the cause meaningful to me? Am I donating to help a relative or friend raise money? Is there another way I can support the mission of the organization? How does it make me feel if my money mainly covers general operating expenses (i.e., salaries rent) for the nonprofit?

Relationships

Why do I have/want a relationship with this person? Am I trying to grow our connection? Am I seeking something for myself to justify the connection? Does this person provide a beneficial/healthy connection for me? Am I yearning to connect with this person so they can be a character in my life story? What can I learn from this person? Do I need this person to be like me and have similar interests to maintain a relationship with him/her/them? Does this relationship bring me peace or joy?

What is the intention of my conversation with this person? Why is this my intention? Do I want to get to know him/her/them better? Am I helping him/her/them solve a problem? Are they helping me solve a problem? Am I actively listening, or do I think about my response? Am I accurately interpreting what they mean or how they feel? What clarifying questions can I ask to get a better understanding of what they are really saying?

Social Media

What is my intention with my social media posts? Am I posting just to interact with my followers, get a reaction out of my followers, and share information for my own keepsake? Do I want everyone who follows me to see this? Why or why not? Do(es) my social media page(s) have a purpose?

Who are my followers? Have I met them/do I know them personally? What is my intention for following the people I do not know/haven’t met before? Am I liking/responding to get attention? Do I intend to meet him/her/them in the future?

Taking Pictures

Why am I taking a particular picture? Is my goal just to share it on social media or to capture the moment? Is this something I will never see again, or is it unique? Will I look at this photo again after I take it/post it on social media? Can I get by with taking one photo of this? Will I be upset if I lose this photo?

Activities

Why am I choosing to do an activity? Is it something I really want to do/see? Am I doing this because I enjoy this activity? Am I doing it because it is convenient (i.e., free)? Or am I doing it to have something to do when hanging out with someone? Would I do/see this again? Am I only going/doing this to share/post on social media?

Am I participating in an activity because I was invited to attend? If I do not want to do/go to this activity, will I be ok if I tell the invitee no? What am I worried about if I say to the invitee I’m not interested in this activity? What can I learn from doing/going to this activity (about the activity, myself, or the invitee)?

Mind and Body

Am I listening to what my body is telling me? How can I relax my body? Is my tongue on the roof of my mouth? Can I loosen my shoulders? Do my stomach muscles or hips feel tight? Does my back hurt? How am I feeling (physically and emotionally)?

Are my thoughts racing? What thought can I focus on and consider on a deeper level?? Am I fully present when I’m engaging with someone or in an activity? If I’m engaging in an activity but not focused, what thoughts are coming up? Can I put those thoughts to the side to be present in what I’m doing? 

Am I exercising because I want to lose weight or build strength? Why do I want to lose weight/build strength? How long am I exercising? Will exercising be effective? What am I doing to exercise my body? Am I in severe pain when I’m doing this workout? Am I doing this because I enjoy this activity? How do I feel afterward?

Food and Drink

Do I feel hungry, or is this the scheduled time that I’m supposed to eat? Am I an emotional eater or eating because I am bored? What is this that I am eating? Where did this food come from? Is this good for my body/wellbeing? Am I continuing to finish the meal because I want to clear my plate/don’t want to waste food, or am I still hungry? Can I stop when I become satisfied? How does my body feel when I am finished?

If I’m not thirsty, should I have a drink (of water) anyways? Does this drink have unnatural ingredients? Does this drink have too much sugar? When I drink (alcohol), am I drinking because I’m in a social setting (peer pressure) or alone? Can I drink in moderation? Do I like the taste of my drink? Or how it makes me feel? Do I drink because it makes me forget my problems? Can I stop when I become satisfied? How does my body feel when I am finished?

Work

Am I in a job that I enjoy? Is this job my true passion, or does it lead me to my passion? Am I building relevant/transferable skills? Am I being mentored or mentoring someone in the job? Are my values aligned with my job’s values? Do I need to make more money (to survive), or do I want to make more money? Why? Can whatever frustrates me in this job be solved? Is the solution within my control? Do I like the job enough to volunteer my time here if I didn’t need the money? Does my job have a true purpose? Would civilization be worse off if this type of job no longer existed?

Is my business a passion of mine or just something that makes money for me? What is the purpose of what I do? Can I easily explain my job/business, or does it require a lot of explanation?

Everyday Experiences

Observe the sounds, smells, sights around me; what do I hear/smell/see and feel? Am I comfortable? Is this something I haven’t experienced before? Is what I’m experiencing pleasing to me? Can I recreate the sound/smell/sight/feeling? What thoughts come to mind while I am experiencing this? How is my mind/body reacting to these experiences? Am I noticing everything around me? Could I draw every detail of this scene later? Am I fully present, or am I focused on other things (my thoughts, past or present situations)?

Thinking about these questions provides me with more clarity and a greater sense of purpose when I am doing something. It also helps me feel better about the decisions that I am making. What can you add to this list that will help you in your life?
