Finding Intention in a Relationship

Finding Purpose in Your Relationship

Leading a life with intention is essential for seeking purpose, but are you leading a purpose-filled relationship? February is considered the month of love and is a great month for my partner and me. We both celebrate birthdays (and a shared zodiac sign), and we also met in February. Then, of course, there’s Valentine’s Day. So as you can see, there’s a lot for us to celebrate.

As a couple who cherishes experiences over materials, a few years into our relationship, we decided to celebrate everything at one time by doing our favorite activity: traveling. We set our destinations on cities we’ve never been to before or that we really enjoyed in the past and identified activities we must do in every city (like visiting cathedrals). These factors (shared celebration month, shared goals, and shared intentions) are just one of the many ways that help us find intention in our relationship.

Here are a few other ways we seek more purpose in our relationship:

Evaluating the Relationship

One of my mentors shared that he and his wife (of 50+ years) go to Stone Mountain, Georgia, every year to do a “check-in” on their relationship. I loved the idea so much that I looked into doing a similar activity for our eight-year anniversary trip. I found some materials online, adapted it, and created a day-long schedule labeling it our “Couples Retreat.” This trip was in our all-time favorite locations of Las Vegas, conducting the retreat at Lake Las Vegas’s tranquil setting. This was the perfect setting to have quiet time for reflection and to set goals. For example, we learned things like our shared value (honesty) and the individual goals one of us thought was important for the other. We also made a goal for the next year, which was to finally move across the country and set the plan.

Identifying Relationship Attributes

During the retreat, we were fortunate to use a PREPARE and ENRICH assessment – a tool to help couples “identify their relationship strengths, understand dynamics, and build skills” – that we took a few years prior. The assessment helped us understand how our families have influenced our flexibility and closeness in our relationship. Our top 10 individual stressors are our conflict style, how we respond emotionally, and our individual strengths and weaknesses in the relationship. This helps us understand each other better when we respond or make decisions in the relationship.

Conducting Research

My partner and I choose not to be married at this time because we have not identified a clear purpose for having the license to be together. Over the years, I discovered that many people in our Western society have gotten married without a true purpose (Listen to my podcast interview to learn more about this), so I conducted my own research to understand the history, anatomy, and behaviors of marriage. I concluded by creating this survey to understand marriage beliefs better. I’ve shared the research journey with my partner, which has caused us to give more thought as to why we would be getting married.

Tools

These tools helped us better understand ourselves individually and as a couple and have also helped us seek more purpose in our relationship. Here are some resources that you can download and adapt to use for any type of meaningful relationship in your life:

Couples Retreat Activity Agenda – Use this tool to check in with your partner and set a path for your future together.

Values Matrix for Couples – Identify your individual goals and combine them to see how they align as a couple.

Mission and Vision Statement Worksheet for Couples – Use this worksheet to create a vision and mission statement as a couple, which will help guide you in your relationship

Wedding Planning Expectation Worksheet – For couples who are engaged or thinking about getting married, this activity will help you and your partner see where you stand on your wedding plans and determine how to compromise on a ceremony that meets everyone’s needs

SkinDeep Card Game – This card game is a series of questions that open up thoughtful and meaningful conversations. The game sets are made for families, couples, friends, yourself, coworkers, and strangers.

5 Love Languages – Do this quiz to learn what love language speaks to you and to your partner

Consider who you are as a couple (or family). Think of your relationship as a brand or business and consider some of the following questions:

  1. What is your mission, vision, or value statement?
  2. Do you know your purpose as a couple?
  3. What are you seeking to solve together?
  4. What do you think you were brought together to do?
  5. What assets do you each bring to the relationship that the other does not possess in terms of personalities?
  6. What are the attributes of your relationship?
