If you need an easy way to worry less or reduce stress and anxiety, then learn to meditate so you can access your Buddha Nature.
During graduate school, I chose a Buddhist Meditation course as an elective. Let me tell you, that was one of the best things I have ever done. At the time, I was grieving and mourning the passing of my mom and dad. I was in this depression that I thought I would never overcome. That is until I learned about my Buddha Nature.
My professor explained the concept of Buddha Nature with an excellent analogy that instantly resonated with me. He told me to imagine the ocean. On the surface, the water may get agitated by storms or ships passing through and become rough and hard to navigate. However, if you dive deep down below the surface, the water is calm and peaceful. As a matter of fact, the deeper you go, the more serene it becomes.
He then told me to relate that same analogy to the mind. For instance, when something causes stress or anxiety, the brain is disturbed. This example is like when the wind agitates the water to create waves. Though if you dive deep into the depths of your being, you will connect with the type of inner peace that is compassionate and loving. That inner peace is your Buddha Nature. That Buddha Nature is within everyone.
My professor also taught me that accessing Buddha Nature is simple and approachable for everyone. You must first calm your mind. A simple way to calm your mind is to meditate. The easy part is that all you need to begin meditating is your breath. You must honor your breath and recognize it as the source of your life.
The most important part of training your mind to be calm is to follow your breath naturally. Do not try to force it or judge that you may be breathing too hard or too shallow. Relax and accept the natural inhalation and exhalation of your breath. If you practice this every day, eventually you will calm your mind and be at peace.
If you would like to know more about this technique, I invite you to watch a full-length video of my professor explaining this concept in detail below.
“Quiet the mind, and the soul will speak.”
~Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati
Even though traditional meditation is about silencing the mind, sometimes it is challenging to achieve that silence in the technology-driven world we live in today. Do not fear, though; you can tailor your meditation routine to fit your needs. Remember, the main focus of meditation is to calm your mind. As mentioned before, a simple way to start meditating is to listen to your breath. Another simple technique is to practice mindfulness. You can learn more about mindfulness here.
However, if you are anything like me, you may need a bit more inspiration. So please feel free to use these ideas to customize your meditation routine. I would also recommend mixing it up, rotate them out, make it your own.
Do whatever makes you comfortable and whatever fits your style. The main objective is to reset your mind so that you can get back to your Buddha Nature. When you connect to your Buddha Nature, you are connected to love, kindness, and compassion. When you live in love, kindness, and compassion, the things that used to stress you out before, no longer possess that power over you. Regaining the ability to control your mind will allow you to access the power to control your life. Your stress is less, sleep is restful, and work becomes more pleasant. People will not be able to push your buttons as often, and so on. The benefits are bountiful.
