Healing with art therapy is such a creative and peaceful way to deal with emotional turmoil. “Art therapy is an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship.”-arttherapy.org
I remember time seemed to stand still when my mom fell ill in November 2014. She was rushed to the emergency room due to a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA). The doctor told us she needed a small operation, and the outlook was favorable. The night after the surgery, my dad called me in a panic. I cannot remember the specifics. I only remember that she was talking and alert before her surgery, then after her surgery, she could barely move due to the tube down her throat. My mom was such a vibrant, beautiful, and Divinely spiritual woman. So words cannot begin to describe how difficult it was to watch her physical body slowly deteriorate.
The definition of emotional pain for me is watching her in a weak physical state in that hospital bed day after day. I felt helpless because I did not have the power to change the circumstances. So, I turned to Xanax and alcohol. When I was awake, I wanted to be high (alcohol), and when I was not high, I wanted to be asleep (Xanax). I could feel myself spiraling into depression, and I knew that I would not be any good to my dad if I hit rock bottom. So, as a healing tool, my Inner Goddess led me to paint again, starting with acrylic paint.
Painting provided a way for me to start healing my soul. Once my paintbrush hit the canvas, my mind and spirit traveled to a different dimension. In this dimension, I could release all my pain and frustration. It was a place where I remembered all the beautiful moments I shared with my mom. This space gave me the freedom to simply be and where my “art therapy” began.
Today, I finally see the light within again. The light of my Inner Goddess is leading me to heal anew. So stay tuned for my next art therapy journey. I think I’m feeling photography next.
Wow!
If you become an avid reader of my blog, you will see that I generally do my own thing. I typically do not subscribe to “traditional beliefs,” “conventional wisdom,” or “societal norms.” So while there are “professional” art therapists, with certifications, I am not one. I simply follow my Inner Goddess and do what makes sense for me and my journey, hence our kind of “therapy sessions.”
I originally created this post in April 2019. Since then, with the direction of my Inner Goddess, my art therapy has been Divinely Elevated! We now have a virtual gallery and online store! Check them out below! Thank you, Goddess!
